First Nations

TBT has developed many long term working relationships with First Nations Communities and Tribal Councils which have resulted from many years of completing successful design and engineering projects. TBT Engineering’s engineering designs respect the need for rugged simplicity in remote areas where access to maintenance contractors cannot always be relied on. As such, our philosophy is to design to the culture and not the status quo.

First Nations Communities across Ontario continue to have expanding infrastructure requirements that are critical to basic community needs and economic development. TBT recognizes these needs and has the resources and experience to provide high quality, low maintenance and reliable mechanical and electrical infrastructure designs and retrofits. TBT has completed well over one hundred successful projects with First Nations clients across Ontario and is firmly committed to maintaining our successful track record going forward.

Remote Fuel Systems

Proper management, storage, and handling of liquid fuels in remote communities is critical to reliable equipment operation and reducing the risk of costly contamination to the natural environment. Many existing fuel storage tank farms are designed around older or out dated codes and standards. As a result, issues often include poor access for operators and maintenance personnel, limited overfill protection, inadequate leak detection, and substandard control equipment.

TBT has extensive expertise in fuel system design and understands the unique challenges of fuel handling and storage in remote areas. Our design philosophy goes well beyond minimal code requirements resulting in industry leading designs. Our design team carefully considers proper containment for spills, robust leak detection, safe fuel transfer areas and processes, abundant access for operator and maintenance personnel, and user friendly web based remote access controls. Based on hundreds of successfully completed fuel system projects, TBT is uniquely qualified to upgrade existing systems and provide designs for new fuel storage and handling systems that have a reputation for extremely safe, low risk, and reliable long term operation.

Diesel Generating Stations

The generation of electrical energy for primary or backup power is the lifeblood of many remote communities that do not have access to the Ontario provincial electrical grid. TBT can provide complete services as a prime consultant for new and retrofitted generating station projects right from feasibility study stages to final commissioning. Assessment of existing facilities is a crucial first step that considers life expectancy, efficiency, capacity and expansion capabilities. As well, appropriate infrastructure such as proposed site location, buildings, access and distribution lines are factored into the study phase that weighs all options against life cycle costing. TBT has the experience and can assemble a highly competent team to provide full engineering services from upgrades to new stations built to Hydro One Remote Communities design standards.

Specialties

Energy Audits

TBT Engineering has many years of experience with commercial sector mechanical and electrical systems design, computer simulated energy analysis and building commissioning. As a result, TBT Engineering intimately understands the energy use and balance within buildings and the complex relationship between electrical and mechanical systems and how they affect operating costs. TBT Engineering has completed over 40 comprehensive energy audits of commercial and institutional type buildings helping our clients to achieve their energy reduction targets.

Our energy audits are based on computerized energy simulation utilizing the latest version of Carriers Hourly Analysis Program (HAP). Computerized energy simulation provides a powerful tool for comparing energy consumption and operating costs of various design alternatives. Once an energy model is constructed, it can be used repeatedly to analyze and compare various HVAC or Electrical upgrades or potential energy retrofits. With such a powerful tool, Profor can quickly identify high value opportunities and upgrades that offer a quick return on investment.

Renewable Energy

TBT has assisted our clients with a wide variety of renewable energy options for their specific location and needs. We have successfully completed projects utilizing photovoltaics, solar thermal (heat recovery solar walls) and smart lighting (intelligent dimming ballast control & daylight harvesting). Smart metering and small wind energy studies and designs are also in our design portfolio.

LEED® Design and Certification

TBT Engineering’s Electrical Division actively considers and promotes the efficient use of electricity and fuel as a matter of policy in all of our mechanical and electrical designs. Our firm currently employs (2) LEED Accredited Professionals (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) that are actively involved in the LEED designs and certification process on several projects. Profor has provided innovative and unique green solutions in our engineering designs on both LEED and non-LEED certified buildings for over 20 years and have fully contributed to helping our clients meet their energy reduction targets while minimizing the negative impact on the natural environment.

Certified Commissioning

The verification of systems, assemblies and equipment has become an important stage in the project planning and executing process. This ensures that all building systems function as intended and proper training has taken place. To meet stakeholder project requirements, the commissioning plan is executed by members of the project team. At various stages of design and construction documentation is carried out by the commissioning authority. In the case of existing facilities the need to re-commission systems is sometimes necessary. Incomplete commissioning on a previous project or changes and additions through the years can affect systems operation and functionality. Our team will properly lead, plan, document and manage your project commissioning requirements so that maximum efficiencies, life cycle and savings are achieved.

Retro-commissioning

Existing-building commissioning, also known as retro-commissioning, is a systematic investigation process for improving or optimizing an older building’s operation and maintenance. It may or may not emphasize bringing the building back to its original intended design since the original design documentation may no longer exist or be relevant. The goals and objectives for applying the process, as well as the level of rigor, may vary depending on the current needs of the owner, budget, and condition of the equipment. The retro-commissioning process most often focuses on dynamic energy-using systems with the goal of reducing energy waste, obtaining energy cost savings, and identifying and fixing existing problems.

TBT can provide full retro-commissioning services utilizing our accredited and experienced commissioning staff. Our Certified Commissioning Building Professional (CBCP) has extensive experience with mechanical design and energy auditing which in turn fully compliments the retro-commissioning process. Other senior senior supporting staff members also have extensive and intimate knowledge of the design, operation, and energy cost management for all types of mechanical and electrical systems within commercial and Institutional facilities. As a result TBT is uniquely qualified to help building owners and operators find ways to retro-commission their facilities for maximum performance and energy efficiency.
