Ministry of Transportation – Northwest Region Aggregate Source Investigation

Details

Background

Every year, the Ministry of Transportation – Northwest Region requires a consultant specializing in Aggregate Resources Prospecting and Evaluation to manage a Total Project Management (TPM) assignment involving multiple Aggregate Source Investigations. The project is required to ensure that a sufficient quantity of aggregates is available for upcoming capital construction and maintenance projects.

TBT Engineering’s Role

Since 1998, the Ministry of Transportation (Northwest Region) has commissioned TBT Engineering to provide these consulting services every year. The sites to be investigated are located throughout Northwestern Ontario. During the investigation emphasis is given to locating the prime aggregate products for MTO purposes.

Project Highlights

Since 1998, TBT Engineering has undertaken these assignments as the Prime Consultant, performing a significant portion of the work including Power Equipment investigations, diamond drilling investigations, field surveying & site plan preparation, laboratory testing and reporting.

In addition to overseeing Cultural/Heritage technical reports, TBT Engineering prepares and coordinates Natural Science technical reports, hydrogeological services and Groundwater Summary Statements

Project Management tasks includes attendance at start-up meeting, progress meetings, coordination of activities of company staff and sub-consultants, and external contacts with Ministries, Municipalities, First Nations, property owners and the general public.

TBT Engineering undertakes preliminary field reviews of the sites prior to performing investigations. As part of the preliminary site assessment/ review, TBT Engineering requests that the appropriate service providers (TCPL, UGL, Bell, etc.) locate all buried utilities present at each site where ground disturbance is proposed. Field notes, photos and logs are generated by a qualified Field Technician with sufficient experience in performing these investigations.

Laboratory testing is completed by TBT Engineering’s Thunder Bay materials testing laboratory. Crushable and non-crushable granular samples as well as crushed rock core samples are processed to provide material test qualities, including superpave consensus properties.

TBT Engineering provides petrographic analysis of granular samples, and detailed geological core logs for rock core samples returned from the field.
